 FREDMUN Becomes International

Frederick Model United Nations – FREDMUN –, the unique Model United Nations in Cyprus at academic level under the auspices of the United Nations, hosted and organized by Frederick University, following the huge success that has enjoyed its organization in 2016, is internationally recognized. It is a great honor that FredMUN has recently established an affiliation with MUNICE, the Model United Nations created in 2013 by students of the University of Nice Sophia-Antipolis in France and supported by the academic community of the Faculty of Law and Political Science of the University.

MUNICE 2017 will be held from 8 to 11 June at the University of Nice Sophia-Antipolis. You can find further details about MUNICE in its official site www.munice.org as well as both in our official site for FREDMUN www.fredmun.org and our official page on Facebook “FREDMUN 2017”.

In the context of this affiliation, it is worth mentioning that it has been formed a delegation from the Department of Law of Frederick University, has been formed and will participate in MUNICE, representing in France the Frederick University!

FREDMUN becomes a member of the most powerful and recognized international Model United Nations! By its affiliations with academic simulations recognized internationally, such as ThessISMUN – Thessaloniki International Students Model United Nations- (www.thessismun.org), the most cherished simulation of United Nations in Greece, RhodesMRC, the academic simulation that follows the practice of Model United Nations, but dedicated to regional organizations (www.rhodesmrc.org), SimUnesCO, which is the first simulation of UNESCO organized in Greece, in association with the Ionian University, the Laboratory of “Languages and Politics” and the Hellenic National Commission for UNESCO” (www.simunesco.com), and now with MUNICE, FREDMUN expands its originality. It should also be noticed that FREDMUN is the only Model United Nations from Cyprus which is affiliated with those simulations and sent a delegation to them. Thus, FREDMUN proves its value and fullfills its commitment to be an institution which promotes diplomacy and the role of international organizations, demonstrates the most serious global issues and gives the chance to young people not only to discuss about them and propose effective solutions but also to be the future diplomats.

Frederick University testifies its international dimension and contribution to the progress of the global community. FREDMUN 2017 is already announced to our official site and page on Facebook and it will take place in Cyprus from 2 to 5 November 2017. Its success is promised to be greater thanks to all the aforementioned factors, but especially thanks to young students from any university in the word who support and spread FREDMUN’s news!

First FREDMUN (Frederick Model United Nations)
AN INSTITUTION IS BORN!

The proceedings of the three day Model Simulation of the UN (FREDMUN) conference, organised for the first time in Cyprus at tertiary level by Frederick University, have been concluded with much success.

This event, considered to be of particular significance for the Cypriot academic community was supported by the official endorsement and support of the UN and under the auspices of the President of the Cyprus Republic Mr Nikos Anastasiades whilst OPAP Cyprus was the official sponsor.

Within the intensive procedures of the UN Simulation Models, students undertake the role of diplomats, representing various States and they are asked to express and negotiate the position of their respective countries on important international issues.

Over 140 students representing 22 Cypriot and international Universities examined, analysed, negotiated a range of significant current international issues and made resolutions.

These included debates on policies for the international sales of Arms, the Debt of countries and its effects on Human Rights, Climate change and how this will affect future generations, the effort to combat terrorism and international human trafficking in relation to the refugee issues.

Students of Frederick University who participated in specific Committees were awarded for their distinguished work. Mr Ansari Rafay Iqbal and Mr Kypros Mavroudis were named as Best Delegates whilst Ms Augusta Aristeidou was honoured with the award of Future Diplomat. In addition, two students of Frederick University received a commendation.

The organisation of the event was widely recognised for its excellence.

Warm hospitality, accurate schedules, effective committee meetings and immaculate professionalism were some of the characteristics of the event.

Most important, however, was the expressed enthusiasm of the students at the conclusion of the proceedings for the work of Frederick University and its philosophy.

This, indeed, is the most important reward for all.

The formal and splendid opening of the event took place in the Presidential Palace, where the Greek Cypriot negotiator in the UN Mr Andreas Mavroyiannis was honoured in the presence of higher Republic Officials, 15 foreign ambassadors and the student-delegates to the Conference. Mr Mavroyiannis accepted a piece of artwork created by the known Cypriot artist Mr Kyriacos Lyras, offered to him by the President of the University’s Council, Mr Michalis Freiderikou, instead of the customary plaque.

The ceremony began with a speech by Dr Konstantinos Kouroupis who was in charge of the FREDMUN Conference and a member of Frederick’s academic team.

Further salutations were delivered by the Minister of Foreign Affairs Mr Ioannis Kasoulides, Professor Paroula Naskou Perraki, the organiser of the Model United Nations of the University of Macedonia and Mr Dimitris Fatouros, the representative of the Press Office for Greece and Cyprus at the UN.

The main address of the ceremony was given by Mr Andreas Mavroyiannis, the honoured guest.

The ceremony concluded with the speech of Frederick’s University Rector, Professor George Demosthenous who in his address referred to the international dimension of the FREDMUN organisational undertaking and its profound importance as a learning experience to students as it constitutes a vital step towards their comprehension of ‘how the world works’, emphasising his conviction that  FREDMUN will become a Cypriot Institution.
