HISTORY 2017

It is an honor for Frederick University to host the second edition of FREDMUN (Frederick Model United Nations), which is the unique Model United Nations (MUN) at an academic level in Cyprus bearing the official stamp of the United Nations. The organisation of FREDMUN will be held in Nicosia, the capital of Cyprus, from 2 to 5 November 2017, at the premises of Frederick University.

The “Model United Nations”, also known as “MUN”, is an extra-curricular academic activity that is recognised and endorsed by the United Nations. The MUN is an educational simulation during which students from all over the world take on roles as country - delegates to the United Nations and simulate United Nations committees. Students research global issues, exercise their diplomatic and social skills, negotiate with supporters and adversaries in order to resolve a conflict and find solutions to problems that affect almost each country on Earth. The MUN offers a great chance to familiarise with the function of United Nations, realizing better its role and missions. The rules of procedure of Model United Nations are similar to those from real United Nations conferences so it becomes apparent that during MUN students represent, for some days, a diplomat from one country.

FREDMUN 2017 will be held with the support of the United Nations Regional Information Centre for Cyprus and Greece in Brussels (UNRIC) as well as of the equivalent Model United Nations hosted by University of Macedonia in Greece, known as ThessISMUN. Furthermore, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Cyprus is greeting this initiative while the information on this initiative from Frederick University, is communicated to the Permanent Mission of Cyprus to the United Nations in New York. It should also to be noted that FREDMUN 2017 is part of the global campaign of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals of the United Nations, especially the one related to the quality of education.

FREDMUN is open both to graduate and postgraduate students from any scientific academic field. In addition, for the first time, FREDMUN 2017 will be open, to high-school students since there has been added, next to existed Committees, the United Nations Human Rights Council.  That Committee will be exclusively reserved for high school students who wish to learn the secrets of diplomacy and discuss about the greatest human rights issues around the world.

FREDMUN 2017 will be a special forum which will offer you a great experience to meet people from different countries of the world, deal with problems which affect humanity, such as human rights violations and political conflicts, develop diplomatic skills in the basis of democracy and dialogue, preparing the future leaders of the world.
